Flexbooks

I am reconsidering my feelings about RSS feeds and Google Reader. I was feeling overwhelmed by the amount of articles, blog posts and news stories I was getting. However, I read an interesting article today sent to me on my Google Reader page. I probably would not have seen the article otherwise.
The article was about teachers writing their own “flexbooks”. It is an interesting concept. I rarely teach from my textbooks and would love to design a curriculum that works for me. Here is the article. Let me know what you think.

  1. Could I recommend doing what I do? If you organize your RSS feeds into specific groups, it's easier to tackle.

I have Tech stories coming into one folder, blogs into another, movies/tv/comics into another. It makes it a little easier to read through when there's 4-5 a folder. Even though there's a hundred or so a day... :P

  2. It sounds like a lot of work for the teacher, but the concept is interesting. I'm surprised they are not saving money. I feel like I kill a lot of trees copying from the book because we don't have enough to go around. Some books, like our Algebra 1 book, have great worksheets but the book is so out of order. We're always looking for an alternative to text books, but I can't see us having the time to turn the curriculum into flexbooks - but it makes me wonder what else is out there!

  3. Interesting idea. I tutor many Sandwich High School students in Spanish, and I know that some of the teachers have to supplement what's in the textbooks. I've also noticed that some of these students respond positively to interactive lessons. It would be great to combine the reading and the interactive aspect online.
